In practice, you can measure quite a bit of variation because of wear in the joints of the mounting frames. When I used to raise corn and it got to about 4 inches tall, I would turn the hillers to cut down and cut each side of the row away until the row was only about 3 to 4 inches wide. I would then side dress them, turn the hillers around and pull the row back up.
