My strategy is usually: wait till somebody else declares war on your enermy and peace out. I wanted to get Trade to 300 and *buy* my own kingdom, but I can't do that before the main quest timer expires. You can still make your own kingdom after the "main quest" expires. Go for ones with the honour trait. These are much less likely to leave and also cost no money to recruit. If you begin to dominate a particular faction you could probably get away with recruiting lord without the honour trait but completely avoid those with honour -1.
