The bushing on the rear of the control arm had worn to the point that when the control arm shifted forward, there would be metal to metal contact.The best way that I could tell ya is to look at the bushings and see if they are worn. If the nut on top is loose, take it the rest of the way off.. and go drive around and see if the noise goes away. Take both sides off, believe its a 14mm nut. The push up on the sway bar to get the bar away from the links.
